This one-day public workshop celebrates the launch of the Foundations of Data Science Institute (FODSI), a 5-year NSF-funded collaboration between UC Berkeley and MIT, partnering with Boston University, Northeastern University, Harvard University, Howard University and Bryn Mawr College. This multidisciplinary institute aims to improve our understanding of critical issues in data science — including modeling, statistical, computational, and societal issues — and their connections. The Simons Institute will play a key role in FODSI's activities, hosting research programs, summer schools, and workshops. The kickoff workshop will include talks covering the eight research themes of the new institute:
- Economics and Learning
- Reinforcement learning
- Causal Inference
- Networks and Graphical Models
- Machine Learning for Algorithms
- Computational Complexity of Statistical Estimation
- Geometric Aspects of Sampling and Optimization
- Sketching, Sampling, and Sublinear-Time Algorithms
This workshop will be held virtually. The workshop is being live streamed on our website. Full participation (including the capacity to ask questions) will be available via Zoom webinar. A link to the Zoom webinar will be shared with registrants closer to the event date. Please register by clicking the registration link above.
If you require accommodation for communication, please contact our Access Coordinator at simonsevents@berkeley.edu with as much advance notice as possible.
