The memory sub-system is a key component in modern computer systems, having a significant impact on capability, performance, energy, cost, and security. For many decades, the memory system underwent very minor changes. But in the last two decades, given technology scaling challenges, there has been a significant investment in new memory technologies and architectures, including processing-in-memory, 3D-stacked memory packages, non-volatile memory cells, and new interconnect topologies. This talk will provide an overview of these recent innovations and describe interesting hardware platforms that can serve as compelling targets for algorithms researchers.
