Abstract

Earthquakes pose a critical threat to people and infrastructure in cities around the world.  By combining advances in earthquake science with new communication and sensing capabilities, it is now possible to provide warning of coming earthquake shaking.  Both traditional seismic sensor networks and the sensors in personal smartphones, make it possible to rapidly detect earthquakes.  This makes it possible to warn of coming earthquake shaking providing time for individuals to move to a safe space, to slow and stop trains, to isolate hazardous machinery and chemicals at work, and thereby reduce damage and injuries.
