UCSC

Stuart Wayland is a PhD student in Computer Science at the University of California, Santa Cruz (Baskin School of Engineering), advised by Prof. Alexandra Kolla. His research studies optimization in synthetic quantum systems, with an emphasis on graph-theoretic formulations of local Hamiltonian and quantum constraint satisfaction problems, variational/approximation algorithms, spectral graph theory, and semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxations and rounding methods. He has contributed results on approximation algorithms for quantum Hamiltonian optimization, including work on entanglement monogamy bounds and certification via sum-of-squares techniques.
