Letter from the Director, May 2023

Dear friends,

Greetings from the Simons Institute, where we are wrapping up our Spring 2023 research program on Meta-Complexity and an extended reunion of the Satisfiability program. It has been a semester full of scientific discoveries, chances to make new friends and reconnect with old ones. Last month, I hosted a gathering of our long-term participants at my home in Berkeley. You can catch a glimpse of our gathering in this photo.

This past week, we hosted a fascinating and timely workshop on Multigroup Fairness and the Validity of Statistical Judgment. In the upcoming issue of the newsletter, we will be sharing an interview with Omer Reingold, who organized and led the workshop. In the meantime, I encourage you to check out the workshop talks. In our SimonsTV corner, I’m pleased to share two of our Spring 2023 public lectures: a Theoretically Speaking talk by Po-Shen Loh on educational adaptation to generative AI, and a Breakthroughs lecture by Raghu Meka on strong bounds for 3-progressions.

We have an intense summer coming up, with a program on new frontiers in Analysis and TCS, and a Summer Cluster on Quantum Computing. I hope to see many of you here!

Best wishes,
Shafi
