Institute Director Search Launched

The search for the next director of the Simons Institute for the Theory of Computing opened on October 1, 2024. Shafi Goldwasser, who held the Institute directorship from 2018 to 2024, stepped down at the end of August. Venkat Guruswami, one of the Institute's two senior scientists, is serving as interim director until the next director is appointed.

We seek a visionary leader who will identify important theoretical topics, oversee the Institute's staffing and operations, lead the Institute’s fundraising efforts, and connect with the international theoretical computer science community to attract leaders and participants for our programs. Reporting to UC Berkeley's Vice Chancellor for Research, the next Institute director will also be appointed to a tenured full professorship on campus. Upon completion of their tenure as Institute Director, which is for an initial period of five years with the possibility of renewal, the position will revert to that of a regular professor. The candidate’s designated home department is open, but should be in a field closely related to the theory of computing.

The full position description and application instructions are here. Applications are due November 11.
