20 years of PIR

I will review the papers that initiated the study of information-theoretic Private Information Retrieval (Chor, Goldreich, Kushilevitz, Sudan, 1995) and of Single-Server Computational Private Information Retrieval (Kushilevitz, Ostrovsky, 1997). I will then give a (partial and biased) view of how PIR was developed since then.
