Locality via Global Ties: Robustness of local algorithms

In this talk, I (or my student Geng) will present work which came out of the Simons program, giving a local algorithm to determine the size of the 2-core. The talk will describe how this fits into a general framework for locally determining global properties, like the size of an epidemic outbreak.
