Fred Roosta

University of Queensland

Fred Roosta is a data science faculty member in the School of Mathematics and Physics at the University of Queensland (UQ). He is also a research scientist at the International Computer Science Institute (ICSI) in Berkeley, California. In addition, he holds an associate investigator position with the ARC Centre of Excellence for Mathematical and Statistical Frontiers (ACEMS). In 2018, he was awarded the Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA) by the Australian Research Council for his research on Second-Order Optimization for Machine Learning.
Prior to joining UQ, he was a post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Statistics and Department of Computer Science at the University of California, Berkeley, where he was supervised by Professor Michael Mahoney. He obtained his PhD from the University of British Columbia in 2015 under the supervision for Professor Uri Ascher.
