Venkat Guruswami Joins Institute as Senior Scientist

It is our great pleasure to announce that Venkatesan Guruswami joined the Simons Institute as a senior scientist on January 1. Venkat comes to us from Carnegie Mellon University, where he had been a member of the computer science faculty since 2009. At UC Berkeley, in addition to his role at the Simons Institute, he will hold faculty positions in EECS and Mathematics.

Venkat’s research interests span many areas of theoretical computer science and related mathematics, including coding theory, approximate optimization, randomness in computing, and computational complexity. He is the current editor in chief of the Journal of the ACM, was previously editor in chief of ACM Transactions on Computation Theory, has served as program committee chair of CCC, FOCS, and ISIT, and was recently president of the Computational Complexity Foundation. He is a fellow of the ACM and the IEEE, and his numerous awards include the Simons Investigator Award, the Presburger Award, Packard and Sloan fellowships, the ACM Doctoral Dissertation Award, and an IEEE Information Theory Society Paper Award. Before joining the faculty at CMU, he was a Miller research fellow at UC Berkeley and held a faculty position at the University of Washington.

We are inspired by the vision, brilliance, and breadth of knowledge Venkat brings to our leadership team at the Simons Institute, and look forward to working with him.

Please join us in welcoming Venkat!
