Abstract

Part 1 Perspectives: (A) Philosopher Daniel Dennett’s three ways to understand systems, culminating in his influential intentional stance. For some systems, the knowing its beliefs and desires beats knowledge of its mechanisms and function. (B) British Psychologist Nick Humpreys assertion that social life does not rest on fundamental cognitive processes, but it’s the other way around. Cognition itself cannot be understood without seeing it in the context of other beings.
Part 2: Facts: (A) Well studied group living among chimpanzees and Meerkats. (B) Subtle perception and action in competitive games.
