Michael Saunders

Professor Emeritus, Stanford University

Michael Saunders is a Professor (Research) Emeritus in the Department of Management Science and Engineering at Stanford University, where he is also a member of the Systems Optimization Laboratory (SOL) and the Institute of Computational Mathematics and Engineering (ICME). He received his MS and PhD in Computer Science at Stanford, advised by Gene Golub, and joined the Department of Operations Research there in 1979. He became Emeritus in 2017 (recalled to active duty).
Research interests: numerical optimization, numerical linear algebra, sparse-matrix methods, portable software.
Teaching: Large-Scale Numerical Optimization (MS&E 318 = CME 338), Linear Algebra and Optimization seminar (CME 510).
